The German international made his first start for Chelsea in the League Cup quarter final with Leeds United on Wednesday night. How did he get on?
Chelsea overcame a half-time deficit to topple Championship side Leeds United in a competitive tie at Elland Road. Luciano Becchio had given Leeds the lead Chelsea bit back in style during the second half with goals from Juan Mata, Branislav Ivanovic, Victor Moses, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres sealing a 5-1 victory.
However one of the most interesting features about the game related to Chelsea’s team selection as German international Marko Marin was handed his first start in a Chelsea shirt.
Since arriving from Werder Bremen in the summer Marin has barely featured for The Blues after some initial fitness worries and through basic de-selection.
While he is hotly tipped by many some commentators have gone on to say that despite early promise to his career with Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen he has gone off the boil slightly in the past 18 months and that the signing was something of a gamble by Chelsea.
So how did the player once dubbed ‘The German Messi’ get on in the fixture?
Well he couldn’t have asked for a more British welcome to football. Elland Road under floodlights in the wind and rain of a chilly December night has to be the perfect induction to English football.
Despite showing little glimpses of his class with decent ball control and a few cute touches here and there from the wing he faded out of the game quickly and will have to do a lot more to earn a place in the first team picture on a regular basis.
But what was the opinion on Twitter…

Marko Marin however, not so much. Don't understand the idea behind his signing. Has potential, of course, not utilised in the starting 11.— Footbino (@Footbino) December 19, 2012
Am i the only person thinking Chelsea are wasting Marko Marin's talent ?— Hervé Dan (@Herve_Dan) December 19, 2012
