Manchester United will need to move quickly to sign this Mexican star

Hector Herrara has been on United's radar for some time, but a growing group of clubs are looking at the midfielder, with Porto and PSG likely to be the Red Devil's strongest rivals for the midfielder.

Hector Herrera announced himself to world football with a string of excellent displays in Mexico's successful Olympics campaign in the summer. On the back of those performaces his domestic side, Pachuca, did well to keep hold of Herrera in the summer, but seem resigned to losing him at the end of the season with their President Jesus Martinez already discussing the myriad of suitors the club have for the midfielder.

Manchester United had looked to the favourites to land the £9 million rated midfielder, but Porto and PSG are reportedly now the major rivals for his signature. Porto are perhaps the side lcurrently eading the chase, with suggestions they are looking at the Mexican midfielder as a replacement for Joao Moutinho, who could leave at the end of the season.

Herrera is an all action box-to-box midfielder in a similar mould to Moutinho, and at 22, he would represent an excellent investment for any club that brought him in. Whilst there will always be a slight doubt over how well a player will adapt when moving to Europe's top leagues, recent successes like Javier Hernandez and Jackson Martinez will have convinced Porto and United of the quality of the Mexican league.

Liverpool are another side who have shown an interest in the past, and Pachuca will no doubt be delighted that so many teams are looking at their player, with his price tag likely to go up as a result. Manchester United will be less pleased with the prospect of going head to head with other teams for Herrera, especially if oil-rich PSG step up their interest.

The man at the centre of all of this looks likely to be the biggest winner of all as having enjoyed a tremendous 2012, Herrera might have an even better 2013. The midfielder recently earned his first cap for senior Mexican national side on the back of his displays at the Olympics, and he will likely be at one of Europe's top clubs come the summer.
