Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is linked with signing for Arsenal in January, but his club hope to convince him to stay.
German club Schalke have the draw Arsenal would have liked in the Champions League - against Galatasaray. They would have had it had they topped the group.
Instead Arsenal face Bayern Munich, a far tougher test - and the Gunners are hoping to get one over on Schalke by adding star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to their squad to give them more of a fighting chance.
The striker has just six months left on his contract, and Arsenal are said to be in pole position to sign him in January if he announces he wants to quit Schalke.
Yesterday it was reported that Schalke are looking to offer him a new contract and pay rise, but there is still haggling going on over the terms.
The German striker is now off on holiday to the Caribbean while the Bundesliga enjoys its Winter break, and Schalke are continuing to plot how to keep the Dutchman.
German news outlet Bild, reports today that Schalke are drawing up a plan to 'spend big in January to convince Huntelaar to stay.
The club have dipped to seventh in the league, and are looking for reinforcements to help climb the table in the New Year.
Manager Horst Heldt discussed 'refuelling' the team by adding new players when speaking to the German media.
Huntelaar has told Schalke that he believes for the club to progress they need to add new faces, and they believe by doing so they stand a better chance of keeping their top goalscorer.
The striker will sit down with the club in the New Year to resume talks, before making an announcement on his future.
Will Huntelaar stay or go? Do you want him at Arsenal?
