Top Five Premier League Goals of 2012

Suarez Liverpool 2

Goals from Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Stoke City players feature.

A run-down of the five best Premier League goals on this calendar year.

In 5th place is Frazier Campbell with his spectacular strike for Sunderland at home against Norwich back on February 1st. He cushions the ball and controls it with one touch before volleying it to lob the keeper. He made it look effortless.

In 4th is former Tottenham Hotspur maestro Luka Modric on May 2nd. The Croatian struck it on the half-volley from 35 yards out flying into the top right corner of Bolton’s goal – perfect precision and a sprinkling of audacity. No surprise Jose Mourinho wanted him at Real Madrid.

Down to 3rd and it’s Liverpool’s Luis Suarez whose hat-trick back in April against Norwich City was magnificent. He scored two inside the box, one from the left, one from the right but his third was scored from just past the halfway line. He lobbed the keeper and the ball seems to hang in the air for an age. Cheeky as ever from the Uruguayan.

Unlucky to miss out on the top spot is Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman picks up the ball in his own half, turns and then runs in a perfectly straight line that could have been drawn on the pitch with a ruler.

He skips past three Bolton challenges and bisects the two centre-backs before sending ball past the goalkeeper low in to the back of the net. He takes 4th place.

Finally, the very best Premier League goal of 2012 has to be Peter Crouch’s sensational lob from 30 yards out against Manchester City on 24th of March.

Not a player especially renowned for his footwork, the ball is hoofed up-field by Stoke City and lands on two different heads, still airborne, before Crouch cushions it with the inside of his right foot and, with his back to goal, volleys it into the back of Joe Hart’s net. He wheels away in surprised celebration as Hart scoops up the ball and hurls it towards the restart in frustration. Priceless.

Who else should be on the list?
