Where did it all go wrong for Yann M'Vila?

France Football

Long-time Arsenal target Yann M’Vila seemed to have the world at his feet this time last year but now seems to have burnt his bridges both and home and away. Will he be granted a second chance in January?

In 2009, at barely 19 years of age, the French midfielder burst onto the Ligue 1 scene with current club Rennes. Hailed as the future of French football, the dominant midfield enforcer is gifted with both technical quality and physical brute and it wasn’t long before his compatriot Arsene Wenger became an admirer of the youngster.

He’d earned his first senior cap for his country in late 2010 and seemed destined for ‘big move’ to a ‘big club’. Comparisons to Patrick Vieira soon followed and rumours that an approach from Arsenal began circulating.

When Alex Song departed for the Nou Camp, speculation of the Frenchman, the stage looked set for his imminent arrival in North London but, all of a sudden, out of the blue, the Gunners’ boss who had been one of his most esteemed admirers had a change of heart.

A dip in form along with a poor disciplinary record wasn’t the only deal breaker, I’m inclined to suggest – there seemed to be major concerns over the youngsters’ attitude.

In May 2012 he was arrested at his home in Vern-sur-Seiche for allegedly punching a 17-year-old acquaintance.

Whilst he was released soon after, it seems Wenger’s concerned were in fact realized and the Arsenal boss is reportedly completely disinterested in the player whose value, much to his club’s despair, is diminished and his reputation as one of the brightest stars of his generation, left tarnished.

However, there is still a bright glimmer of hope for the player who has effectively said he wants to come to the Premier League – his club have reportedly offered him on a plate to Arsenal for just £8 million, almost half his valuation in the summer.

Could Wenger’s frugality get the better of him this time around – the next Patrick Vieira at half-price discount in the January sales may prove to be too irresistible an opportunity.

After all, doesn’t everyone deserve a second chance?
