Spanish fans hail ex-Tottenham star Luka Modric as 'Fiasco of The Year'

Tottenham V Arsenal Modric

Tottenham Hotspur cashed in on Luka Modric in the summer - And it hasn't gone to plan for the Croatian so far at the Bernabeu. An ex-Arsenal player will share his pain...

For the price Real Madrid paid for Luka Modric, fans are right to have high expectations.

£33 million Madrid laid out for the Croatian - That's 16 and a half Michu's!

While the former Rayo Vallecano player is tearing up the Premier League, Modric is not enjoying the same success over in La Liga.

An end of year poll in Spanish newspaper Marca asked readers who the biggest 'fiasco' or disappointment of 2012 was?

The options were all new signings, and Luka Modric was the unfortunate 'winner' - receiving nearly one third of the vote.

It's easy to see why fans in Spain, and particularly of Madrid - Marca's biggest readership - feel that way.

Real Madrid won the Spanish title last season, and signing Modric was supposed to make them even stronger. Right now they sit third, 16 points off leaders Barcelona, and the title already looks an impossibility.

There are a number of factors to Madrid's poor form - uncertainty over the future of Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso are three key issues which need to be resolved. Until they do, Madrid will likely remain in a rut.

Modric is not the type of player who wows fans with goals and assists, but rather one which allows the rest of the team's attacking talent to blossom by controlling the midfield.

So far in La Liga Modric has made just eight starts this season, last playing 90 minutes in the league in mid-November. Holding down a place in Madrid's midfield is his first mission for the New Year.

Once he does that, he will be able to start justifying his price tag, but not before.

Another player to also suffer humiliation in the poll was former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song, who came 'second'. The Cameroonian international signed for Barcelona in August and has also struggled to hold down a place, making just six La Liga starts. There have even been rumours he could be a summer target for PSG.

Perhaps the Premier League isn't all its cracked up to be after all...
