Arsenal tracking Jonas Olsson at West Brom?

Arsenal V West Brom

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reportedly been in contact with West Brom defender Jonas Olsson’s agent Martin Dahlin to reveal his interest in bring him to the Emirates.

The Swedish international could come in replace outgoing defensive flops Johan Djourou and Sebastian Squilacci who are currently agreeing terms for their departures.

The 29-year-old is understood to have a £3 million release fee built into his contract at The Hawthorns and, as such, would be considered a bargain. His international caps for Sweden combined with his knowledge of the Premier League would make him an ideal candidate for covering Arsenal’s defensive gaps.

At 6ft4” he would add height an aerial authority to a perpetually vulnerable Arsenal defence. He’s similar to Per Mertesacker in his attitude and application – he’s calm and cautious, rarely beaten in the air and an experienced and assured voice in the dressing room.

The player himself has responded to Wenger’s praise. He told Expressen,

“It's flattering that there is interest but I am focusing on West Bromwich Albion and the current season. I am happy at the club and, as I have said before, it should be something attractive if I should leave West Brom."

Funds generated by outgoing central defensive pair Djourou and Squilacci could very easily surpass the buyout clause in Olsson’s contract and with the emergence of youngster Ignasi Miquel, Arsenal could have two like-for-like replacements for their out-of-favour squad players.

However West Brom manager Steve Clarke has stated the player is not for sale.

"We can hang on to every single player. We don't have to sell anybody.

"Speculation is natural, because people make up stories to generate the interest. I know they make them up.

"But it's not unsettling for me in anyway, because I know that, come 1st February, the players that I need to be here will still be here."
