Would Chelsea fans rather have seen Lucas Piazon play instead of Torres?

Fernando Torres May 2012

The Spaniard is still struggling for his best form and with the arrival of Demba Ba he finds himself under serious pressure for a starting berth. Lucas Piazon is set to move on loan to Malaga - Are Chelsea missing a trick?

Fernando Torres’s time at Chelsea has been a continual rollercoaster. This month it has taken another turn after Demba Ba arrived at the club from Newcastle United for a fee believed to in the region of £7 million.

Just by a simple comparison of the two player’s stats over the past couple of seasons you can see why Ba has been brought into the club. Last Season Torres scored six Premier League goals compared to Demba Ba’s 16. So far this campaign Torres has seven to Ba’s 13.

Based on those facts; and another inept performance from the Spaniard against Swansea in the League Cup you have to believe that the Senegalese striker should be Chelsea’s first choice striker. Stomach bug or no stomach bug that was simply one of the most inept performances from a striker I can remember seeing.

Watching Torres sulk on the bench is slightly better than watching him sulk off of it.

While Rafa Benitez will obviously believe in him after witnessing the very best of Torres at Liverpool first-hand fans are certainly starting to lose patience with the 28-year-old once dubbed ‘El Nino’. Rumours in the press have even suggested that Torres longs for a return to one of his former clubs; with Atletico Madrid and Liverpool both being linked.

So with his stock never lower and at the moment no sign of a return to his imperious best after over two years of waiting is it time to hand the reigns to somebody else.

Make Ba the number one and give an opportunity for Lucas Piazon to shine for the remainder of the season. It's too late now, but Benitez should have done it given their lack of options up front.

He is clearly passionate about playing for Chelsea and his performance against Aston Villa really caught the eye; regardless of missing a penalty. Sure he does not have the experience of Torres but players need to start at some point and if you are good enough then you are old enough; Torres should know that from becoming Atletico captain as a teenager.

While Torres’s career seems to be petering out they have a highly talented player on the verge of his 19th birthday just dying to play in the Premier League. The move may pay off next season, but they could really have done with using him more now.

Would you rather have seen Piazon play over Torres?
