Should Arsenal be looking at a different Lopez?

Arsene Wenger Looks On

There has been plenty of speculation about a move for Adrian Lopez of Atletico Madrid, but Arsenal should perhaps take a look at Lyon's Lisandro Lopez instead.

With Arsenal testing the nerves of their fans with a transfer window that has so far been comprised of disclosing tentative interest in targets ranging from Wilfried Zaha to Edinson Cavani, it's difficult to know how much of the speculation surrounding their interest in certain players can be trusted.

However one man they have persistently been linked with is Atletico Madrid's Adrian Lopez, who could be available for around £14 million. The Atletico forward is a player with plenty of potential, but it's difficult to see him improving Arsenal's side enough to justify the hefty price tag.

If they were looking to reinforce their forward line they could do a lot worse than looking at a different Lopez. Lyon's financial troubles mean that they are willing to sell one of their forwards, and with Bafetimbi Gomis looking set to stay in France, Lisandro Lopez could be available at a relatively low price.

Lopez is not a Cavani or a Falcao, but is a reliable goal scorer who can play either through the centre or on the left flank. He is not an outrageously prolific player, but should more or less guarantee 15 goals a season for his side, and he has enough experience to settle quickly in the Premier League, and aid Arsenal's bid for a Champions League place.

At 29, Lisandro Lopez is five years older than Adrian Lopez, but he would be substantially cheaper than the Atletico Madrid player, and would also be more likely to be able to hit the ground running at the Emirates. Arsenal fans might be hoping a world class star like Cavani will arrive this January, but this seems incredibly unlikely, and the importance of finding the right player to boost the rest of their season cannot be overstated.

Even if Wenger really rates Adrian Lopez as someone who can become a top class player at the Emirates, it would still probably be worth waiting until the summer to make a move for him, and in the meantime, Lisandro Lopez could provide the firepower to seal fourth place.
