Goals from Adrian Lopez and Koke gave Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Levante in a result that saw them close the gap on league leaders Barcelona.
Diego Simeone’s side started the game knowing a result would see them gain ground if only slightly on leaders Barcelona and they produced a solid display against Levante to do just that.
The first real chance of the game came as Radamel Falcao linked with Adrian Lopez to create a sight on goal but the Arsenal target saw his shot blocked.
The former Deportivo man has been increasingly linked with a move to the Premier League with the Gunners heavily interested in his services but time will tell if Atletico accept a proposed £12m bid.
However he was making the most of a rare start alongside Falcao and broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark when he was found by 18-year-old Manquillo, before putting the ball in the back of the net.
If ever the young Spaniard was to make a point to Simeone now was the night and Adrian’s performance will make it even harder for Atleti to keep hold of him.
The scoreline stayed the same until half-time but Atletico continued to dominate throughout and once the game was back underway, more chances came the way of Falcao and Adrian.
However, the former would go off injured after he fell to the ground holding his hamstring and was replaced by Diego Costa.
The Brazilian made an instant impact and linked up well with Koke who scored a stunning 25-yard strike to make it 2-0.
Juanlu had a final chance for Levante late on but the visitors could do nothing about Atletico’s dominance and the score remained the same.
Elsewhere in Spain, Barcelona lost their first game of the La Liga season to Real Sociedad on Saturday evening, Osasuna beat Deportivo 2-1 in Sunday's early kick-off, whilst Real Valladolid continued their impressive campaign by beating Zaragoza 2-0 at home.
