Could Chelsea offer Thibaut Courtois as a 'sweetener' in a bid for Falcao this summer?

Thibaut Coutois

The young Belgian is currently out on loan at Atletico Madrid where he is of course a team-mate of the Colombian marksman. With Chelsea facing stiff competition for the striker could they sacrifice the youngster in order to make Atletico favourable towards their offer?

There are only a handful of teams in world football who can come close to the type of fee that Colombian striker Radamel Falcao will command in the summer. Paris Saint-Germain have been buoyed recently by positive talk aimed their way by the Atletico Madrid striker and the Qatari owned club can certainly squander the money necessary to bring him in.

Real Madrid may not be sitting as financially pretty as always but you can be sure they would find a way to sign Falcao if they made him their number one target; they rarely miss out on those.

Manchester City have seemed to be distanced from a Falcao move in recent weeks but if Carlos Tevez does decide to not sign his contract extension and they finally decide to part company with Mario Balotelli than a move for Falcao makes sense on every level.

Then there is Chelsea. The perennial big spenders in recent years they would certainly have the cash available for a deal and Roman Abramovich is known to be a fan after witnessing the way Falcao single-handedly tore his beloved Blues apart in the Super Cup on Summer Transfer Deadline Day 2012.

But you can see above that Chelsea have some pretty fierce competition for his signature and in order to secure him they may need to offer more than just money for his services. That is where a little bit of inventive bargaining power may just come into play from the officials at Stamford Bridge.

This summer Atletico Madrid are looking to do a number of things. First things first they need to balance their books with an amorous Spanish tax-man breathing down their necks the risk of missing out on Europe through Uefa’s Financial Fair Play Regulations is too big to chance it. Therefore the likes of Falcao, Adrian Lopez and Arda Turan are all said to be up for grabs.

On top of that they want to consolidate some of their players already at the club; including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian international however, for those not up keeping with the European loan-market, is only being borrowed by Los Colchoneros from… Chelsea.

Obviously in an ideal world Chelsea would love to keep hold of Courtois but he is fast outgrowing the position of a loaned out goalkeeper. Considered one of the best young goalkeepers in the world he has been integral to Atletico’s recent success. He even admitted himself recently that a third season on loan at Madrid was preferable to playing understudy to Petr Cech at Chelsea.

The Czech stalwart is only 30-years-old and even with Chelsea’s rather ageist views toward the employment of their players he clearly has three or four good seasons left in him yet; we all doubt that Courtois is willing to wait that long.

As good as the youngster is he is certainly not irreplaceable and his services are currently not needed at Stamford Bridge and won’t be for a while considering Petr Cech is standing in his way.

Therefore there is certainly food for thought that in order to sweeten Atletico toward favouring a bid from the London club the offer of Courtois’s permanent services could surely be mentioned in discussions.

Do you think Chelsea should offer up Courtois as bait for Falcao?
