Bale: I want to be as good as Ronaldo

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale has revealed that he bases himself on how Cristiano Ronaldo plays at Real Madrid.

Gareth Bale is the best left sided player in the Premier League and if he can fulfil his dream of being more like Cristiano Ronaldo, then it’s frightening to think of what he might be capable of.

He’s already got a good head start because there are already some similarities between the two players; blistering pace, brilliant control and the ability to take a match away from the opposition very quickly.

Bale has revealed that he mimics certain parts of Ronaldo’s game in the hope that he can one do be talked about along the same lines as the player who would undoubtedly be hailed as the greatest, were it not for Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

“People have said things in the past [that] the stuff he does is similar in a way to what I do - He is obviously doing something right and it's good to look at other players, how they do things and take my game to another level,” Bale said as in the Guardian.

So can Bale become as good as Ronaldo currently is?

Well, they are two completely different players to start off with which makes it doubtful. Ronaldo started as a right winger with Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United before converting into more of a centre forward.

Bale’s success and effectiveness in the role at Spurs is so high that it would seem pointless to seemingly jeopardise that by trying to change his game to become more of a forward or goalscorer.

One change he could make which would get him closer to Ronaldo’s level is becoming more effective on the right side of the pitch.

This may sound counter productive because Bale is left footed but one of the first changes Sir Alex Ferguson made with Ronaldo at Manchester United, was getting him to play down either side of the pitch.

What this means for Spurs is that Andre Villas-Boas can tell Bale to switch if he’s getting outnumbered or muted down one side of the pitch.

The other immediate area where he could change is his finishing. Ronaldo is deadly when he gets into certain situations in front of goal. If Bale can work on his finishing and improve his strike rate, it will effectively give Spurs a chance of scoring every single time he goes forward.

There’s no harm in wanting to be the best, it’s just a problem becoming the best.

Do you think there’s any chance Bale can be as good as Ronaldo?
