Peter Odemwingie’s proposed move to QPR had been well documented in the build up to Deadline Day. When Sky Sports footage showed him rolling up to Loftus Road, many QPR fans would have thought ‘great, what a deal’.
However, there was no deal so what went wrong?
It seems there’s been a massive breakdown in communication between the player and the people who are apparently meant to be representing him in the right way.
An agent or someone similar close to Odemwingie could have hinted that a move to QPR was possible if the player was willing to try and force through a deal but when he tried, he was banned from entering Loftus Road by QPR.
QPR boss Harry Redknapp was involved in several other deals yesterday so it’s no surprise that he was far too busy to rectify this situation himself, which literally would have taken one phone call to the player.
“I think he probably felt that the deal had been agreed between the clubs and it hadn't and it was all a bit of a mix-up, really. I feel sorry for the lad and the way the whole thing's turned out. It wasn't any of our doing. I think maybe he was advised that he should turn up here,” said Redknapp.
He now has to go back to West Brom for the second half of the season where he’ll be fined, where he’ll be shunned by teammates and fans and where he’ll be humiliated because someone seemingly promised him something which was never going to happen.
The West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has confirmed that Odemwingie will be fined two weeks wages for effectively trying to leave the club without any sort of consent.
Maybe it would be a good idea for him to change the people that represent him to ensure that this sort of breakdown in communication never happens again.
It could well be an example of agents going mad and ruining the game, which is something Redknapp touched on himself earlier in the week. Someone would have seen an opportunity to make money out of the deal and because the clubs weren’t talking, that person told Odemwingie to take the matter into his own hands.
It’s quite simple as to what he now has to do; work his socks off to get back the respect of anyone and everyone connected to West Brom because even the tea lady couldn’t be blamed for shunning him.
