News and gossip from The Emirates over the past 24 hours.
Arsene Wenger has announced himself pleased with the performance of Nacho Monreal on his debut against Stoke City this weekend. The Spaniard only arrived at the club on Thursday but was thrown into the deep end against Tony Pulis’s physical Potters; and even came head to head with Jonathan Walters and lived to tell the tale. Wenger believes he will show his class at the club.
Wenger also believes that the club are now more physically prepared to deal with the rigours of Premier League football. The team has been labelled as ‘soft’ in the past but Wenger feels the likes of Olivier Giroud, Per Mertesacker and Abou Diaby have now toughened up the side.
Theo Walcott has urged his team-mates to end the clubs silverware drought this season and give the fans the reward they deserve. Walcott sees this seasons FA Cup as a great opportunity to do so and believes the club has a ‘’great chance’’ of winning the trophy this season. Arsenal last won a trophy the year before Walcott joined from Southampton in 2006; and are currently behind in the Premier League, out of the League Cup and up against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Arsenal will chase strikers Alain Traore and Stevan Jovetic in the summer. According to The Metro Arsenal were looking to bring in the Burkinabe striker after he continued to impress during the African Nations Cup for Burkina Faso. He has impressed since joining Lorient, a team with which Arsene Wenger has a good working relationship, and is reportedly available for £5 million.
Meanwhile it is being reported in other quarters that the Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic should be on the way to Arsenal in the summer. Fiorentina have prepared for his departure by bringing in former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi. The Montenegrin is available for his release clause of £21.7 million and there are reports that Wenger is prepared to shell out for his talents.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed that he is still listening to the advice of former team-mate Robin Van Persie about his young career. Chambo has been in and out of the team in recent weeks but has no concerns about his career as RVP told him last season that he had to be prepared to bide his time in North London.
