Lewis Holtby: What are Germany playing at?

Lewis Holtby

Should Lewis Holtby be a first choice midfielder for the German national side.

Lewis Holtby has made such an impression since he joined Tottenham Hotspur early, it’s amazing to consider why he isn’t regularly playing for the German national team.

In their last World Cup qualifier against Sweden, he wasn’t even in the squad as the Germans drew 4-4 with Sweden after holding a 4-0 lead.

The standard of German football must be pretty epic at the moment for a player of his quality and calibre to not even be able to get into the side.

He’s one of the unluckiest players around because take away the likes of Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira and he probably would have doubled his international appearances already.

Taking a look at his qualities as a player, there are several reasons why the Germans should name him, at least, in their squad for every single international match they have coming up.

The overwhelming feature of his game which he’s shown at Spurs is superb energy and fitness. He looks as though he can run all day long and it won’t be a surprise if he breaks the Tottenham bleep test record.

He keeps things so simple as a player which is very important for any star looking to play for their national side regularly.

He never seems to play a pass more than ten yards away and he doesn’t seem to receive very many long passes. This simplicity makes him reliable in extreme pressure situations.

Germany has a core group of talented midfield players which also includes the Bender brothers who should also be playing national football regularly.

Add to the mix one or two other in form Germans and you quickly have a group of at least six midfield players who can all play in the same position, what a position to be in for the country.

There is absolutely no reason why Holtby should not be one of the players seriously pushing Ozil and Khedira over the coming weeks and months.

Ironically, he may even have moved away from Germany to get a higher profile role in another team, which should in turn give him a better chance of grabbing the attention of German officials.

Do you agree that Holtby should be in the German side?
