Scolari regrets turning down England job

Luiz Felipe Scolari says it still hurts him that he turned down the chance to manage England.

Luiz Felipe Scolari says the fact he turned down the chance to become manager of England is still something which haunts him to the day.

Scolari was approached to manage England in 2006 but rejected as the FA wanted him to commit before the World Cup, he will begin his second spell in charge of the Brazilian national team in the friendly against England this evening.

Scolari describes England as one of the greatest countries in the world when it comes to the great game and says had the offer come at pretty much any other time, then he would have jumped at the chance to manage the team.

“Of course it hurts. It hurts a lot because I would have loved to have been manager of the England national team. Who wouldn't? When I was invited to be national coach of England – I still had a contract with the Portugal national team. And I wasn't willing to break that contract,” said Scolari.

So it leads the mind to wonder into thinking about what sort of side England would have been under the guidance of Scolari as boss?

Well we got a brief idea of it during his time as manager of Chelsea which was abruptly halted due to some poor results and the fact that he was trying to change the club and the team in several ways.

He is not afraid to be flamboyant as a coach but he does not sacrifice the basic tactics of his team, just to pacify the desires of the millions that love to watch attacking football.

He’s won the World Cup before with Brazil, back in 2002 and has a wealth of experience which has seen him win well over a dozen honours with other sides throughout his managerial career.

It’s effectively a come and get me plea if England are ever going to consider another foreign coach.

However, he may have missed out on his chance because the FA seem to have switched back to English managers now that the tests with foreign coaches have been tried and have not succeeded.

Unfortunately we’ll never know what sort of team England may have been with Scolari in charge but we can all sit back and marvel at the style of play we may have enjoyed at Wembley this evening.

Do you ever see Scolari becoming England coach?
