Free Agent Watch: Featuring Saha finds new club and Zambrotta

Louis Saha

Former Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers, Udinese, Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus players feature.

The Transfer Window has now been and gone and for Premier League teams that means the last chance to sign talent is now over. Or is it?

Players who for whatever reasons find themselves currently without a club are not constrained by the tyranny of the transfer window and can float around happy in the knowledge that they can negotiate with who they want whenever they want about their future employment; you know like a normal person can.

One high profile free agent has found himself a new club bringing an end to a career in the UK. Former Manchester United, Fulham and Everton striker Louis Saha has a signed for Serie A side Lazio until the end of the season. The Rome club are in the hunt for the Italian title but recently saw their star striker Miroslav Klose ruled out for the season with knee ligament damage. He was initially thought to be on his way to Bidvest Wits in South Africa but a crack at a top league for one last time has lured the Frenchman away from such a move.

Another high profile free agent who is still looking for employment is Scotland international goalkeeper Craig Gordon. Britain’s most expensive goalkeeper made the greatest save in the Premier Leagues history so far to deny Zat Knight a few seasons ago but has struggled with serious knee injuries ever since. He recently spoke of his fitness ordeal and is currently not prepared to return to professional football. He has already started his coaching badges and it may well be that the stopper never plays again.

Blackburn Rovers released a couple of players during the transfer window including Montenegrin international Simon Vukcecvic. A move to APOEL Nicosia has failed to materialise for the 27-year-old attacking midfielder and he is still currently available if anybody was willing to take a punt. Amine Linganzi who signed from Saint Etienne in 2010 has also left the club and is available on a free transfer.

Italian international and former Barcelona full-back Gianluca Zambrotta is also still available and has not yet announced his retirement from the game. The former Juventus and AC Milan man has been without a club since the summer and could still do a job even at the age of 35. He currently has a summer holiday home near Dublin and didn’t rule out the possibility of one day playing in the Airtricity League; Zambrotta at Shamrock Rovers anyone?

Udinese released Christian Obodo in the summer and the 28-year-old still finds himself looking for a club. Capped 21 times by Nigeria he was reportedly all set for a move back to his homeland this summer. However whilst visiting he was kidnapped on his way to church and after 24 hours in captivity he was rescued by the Nigerian Police Force. A midfield enforcer he could certainly do a job and a recent link with Belarusian side Dinamo Minsk seems to have fallen by the wayside.

Would you like your club to sign any of these players?
