La Liga latest: Including Ronaldo's contract talks and Barca in for David Luiz

Cristiano Ronaldo

All of the latest news from Spanish football.

Marca journalist Anton Meana has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo is close to signing a new contract at Real Madrid. Ronaldo is expected to agree to an extension on his current deal which will see him tied down to the Spanish giants until 2018 despite speculation he will move on in 2016.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has said he would find it very difficult to join Manchester City because of his Manchester United roots. City have been linked with Ronaldo as a possible club should the Portuguese forward decide not to renew his contract at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona have been linked with a summer swoop for Chelsea central defender David Luiz. David Luiz is thought to be one of Tito Vilanova’s priorities for the summer and it’s a move which could work well considering Barcelona’s history of converting defensive midfielders into outright centre backs.

Barcelona are thought to be the favourites to sign Neymar this summer as they continue their relentless pursuit of the Brazilian. The Spanish giants are thought to be leading a large group of clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City and Bayern Munich who all want to sign the star.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he regrets not signing Raphael Varane before he joined Real Madrid. Arsenal had the chance to sign the centre back when he was at French club Lens and Wenger says it’s a possible transfer he regrets not making during his time at the Gunners.

Chelsea star Michael Essien says he loves every minute of playing in a Real Madrid shirt. Essien is on loan at the Spanish champions from the current European champions until the end of the season but it’s unclear whether Real Madrid will try and secure him permanently this summer.

Several Premier League clubs have been put on red alert as speculation over the future of Alex Sanchez grows. The Barca wide man is struggling to have an impact at the club and he could be the subject of a big money move from Juventus. If that falls through then a bidding war in England could break out.

Espanyol right back Javi Lopez is expected to be out of action for the rest of the month. Lopez finished the recent game at San Mames with a badly strained knee and the Espanyol medical team continue to monitor the injury to pinpoint the precise problem.

Several Spanish clubs are reportedly tracking the progress of Eliaquim Mangala at Porto. Mangala has been one of the most consistent players for the Portuguese side this season and several Spanish media sources are suggesting he could be heading for La Liga in the summer.
