Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester United: United Player Ratings

Champions League Pitch

We rate the Manchester United team which managed to secure a 1-1 draw last night at the Bernabeu.

Manchester United dug in to take a 1-1 draw back to Old Trafford in a match many expected them to heavily lose. A goal from Danny Welbeck was countered by a Cristiano Ronaldo header.

We’ve taken a closer look at United’s players and rated them.

David De Gea: 8 – Maybe people will start to get off of this guy’s back because he excelled himself in his home city. Made key saves when he needed to including a world class stop at 0-0.

Rafael: 6 – Looked as though he was struggling with the pace and movement but went to the basics under pressure and did them well, made some key interventions and the experience will benefit him.

Rio Ferdinand: 7 – Ferdinand played superbly through the middle of defence, making one world class interception in the second half which stopped Ronaldo from walking onto a sitter.

Jonny Evans: 7 – As per Ferdinand, didn’t really put a foot wrong all night. Mopped everything up when Real Madrid did play the ball long and he was never caught out of position.

Patrice Evra: 6 – Not his best game in a Manchester United shirt but did the basics well and could do nothing about Ronaldo’s goal. He needed a step ladder to get as high up as the former United star.

Phil Jones: 7 – Starting to look like a really immense player. Worked his socks off all night long, all over the pitch and got into some great defensive positions to make vital interceptions.

Michael Carrick: 7 – Solid as every United fan has come to expect from Carrick. Looked exhausted at the final whistle but then he had been running for virtually the entire match to close off space.

Shinji Kagawa: 5 – Subbed off after an hour as he never really got into the game. Got into some great positions in the first 20 minutes but his control and timing was a little bit off, which saw him caught offside.

Danny Welbeck: 8 – Superb performance from the young United star. Showed great strength just to push away Sergio Ramos and give himself room to head United’s goal. Also would have scored a blinder after a piercing run if he’d connected with a shot.

Wayne Rooney: 7 – Dropped into midfield when he needed to, looked up for it and didn’t deliver a single poor set piece which gave United a chance whenever they picked up a free kick.

Robin Van Persie: 6 – Rated at six because he missed a couple of really good chances to win United the match. Hit the bar before missing a simple shot, unchallenged. Could have won it at the end but for another great save.

Subs:

Ryan Giggs: 6 – Added a lot of calmness and composure down the left when he was introduced for Kagawa. Should regret not hitting a half chance first time which was on his stronger side.

Valencia: N/A – Never really had long enough to band himself on the game. His pace was useful on the counter attack.

Anderson: N/A – Added late on to give United an extra body in the middle.
