Tottenham fans had a few interesting comments to say about former player Luka Modric who did not feature in the starting XI for Real Madrid against Manchester United.
Luka Modric was Real Madrid's big summer buy, costing more than £30 million. With Spurs currently sitting in third position in the Premier League, it appears no ill-fortune has befallen them from selling the midfielder, while for the Croatian it has not gone to plan.
At the turn of the year he suffered the humiliation of being voted La Liga's 'flop of the season' - an 'award' shared by former Arsenal star Alex Song.
Now for Madrid's biggest game of the season, at home to Manchester United in the Bernabeu, he was not selected. What's more, it didn't come as a surprise, with Sami Khedira, and Xabi Alonso holding down the central midfield berths. Modric has played 15 starts for Madrid this season, compared to Alonso's 27.
The 27-year-old did come on for the final 15 minutes, and showed some bright touches, typically completing 95 per cent of his passes. Even so, it's still a push to imagine him starting at Old Trafford in the return leg.
Tottenham fans, re-united with the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their former player, had some cutting observations to make towards the Croatian last night. Here's a selection of what they had to say on twitter.
@_j_goldstein: Modric on the bench a warning for Bale. Grass is not always greener...
@njhag: How much did Levy screw out of Madrid for Modric? Deal of the century.
@mrphudson: Nice to see Modric has achieved his dream by starting in the biggest game of his career so far. Oh, wait...
@barry_hayward: These are the types of games that Modric moved to Madrid to warm the bench for
@sw19fh: Is it just me or is Modric unsuited as small fish in big pond? See Bent, Dozzell & loads more at WHL...
Would you take Modric back at Spurs?
