Transfer Talk: Manchester United and Arsenal in £80 million La Liga raid?

Angel Di Maria

Reports in Spain have claimed Manchester United and Arsenal are to combine to raid La Liga.

The latest reports from the Spanish press have claimed Manchester United and Arsenal are both interested and have made initial approaches over signing five players from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Malaga - for a combined £80 million.

The source is Spanish Daily paper AS, who also claim Wigan Athletic are tracking former Liverpool youngster Nabil El Zhar of Levante.

Here are the five deals it claims are on the horizon and our verdict on each of them.

Victor Valdes to Arsenal (£10 million)

Spanish goalkeeper Victor Valdes has made it clear to Barcelona that he wants to move on to experience a new league, having won it all with Barcelona, yet still out of the international picture behind Iker Casillas. Arsenal are said to have the biggest interest, looking to put pressure on Wojciech Szczesny who has been out of sorts of late. With Vito Mannone looking certain to leave when his contract expires, its inevitable Arsene Wenger will bring in a new goalkeeper - and an experienced winner is what they need.

Likelihood rating 4/5

Dani Alves to Arsenal (£10 million)

Dani Alves is an exciting right-back, who can get away with his defensive inadequacies due to the way Barcelona control the midfield, allowing him to bomb forward. Whether he would enjoy the same success at Arsenal is another matter, and a transfer depends wholly on whether Bacary Sagna moves on or not. Given the failure of Brazilian full-back Andre Santos, Wenger may be advised to skip on Alves, but he would be an interesting player for Carl Jenkinson to learn from.

Likelihood rating 1/5

David Villa to Arsenal (£15 million)

David Villa to Arsenal is a rumour which has been doing the rounds since January, with Barcelona refusing to sell then. It's considered they are likely to in the summer, with AS re-affirming Arsenal's interest today. The Spanish all-time record goalscorer is wanted by Atletico Madrid, who will surely be able to offer Champions League football next year. Whether Arsenal will is another matter entirely. Wenger last week said Villa is not his 'biggest priority' which makes us skeptical, although it has been claimed the Gunners are Villa's top choice.

Likelihood rating 2/5

Isco to Manchester United (£25 million)

AS claim today that Manchester United are firmly in the race for Malaga winger and playmaker Isco, who more or less confirmed at the weekend he expects to be sold this summer to solve any financial issues the Spanish side have. United face competition from Manchester City and Chelsea - who are rumoured to have first option on him, with Real Madrid also believed to have him on their list of top targets. United could win the race, but only if they make him a top target.

Likelihood rating 2/5

Angel di Maria to Manchester United (£20 million)

Argentine winger Angel di Maria has had a mixed season which took an upturn when he provided an assist against United at the Bernabeu last week, showing them what he is capable of. Madrid want Isco or David Silva themselves and are willing to offload Di Maria to finance a move an accommodate a new player. Although United have Zaha incoming, di Maria could be a target if they move on Nani as expected, or Ashley Young.
