Abidal return is a huge positive for Barcelona

Eric Abidal has been given the all clear to play for Barcelona following his liver transplant.

This bit of good news couldn’t have come too soon for Barcelona following the way their defence was ripped apart by AC Milan the other night.

Eric Abidal has been going through one of the toughest patches of his life, personally and professionally, as he’s adjusted to receiving a new liver following a cancerous tumour problem.

Abidal is a key and experienced figure in the Barcelona defence and someone who holds a lot of respect away from the field as much as he does on it.

At a time when Barcelona are also missing their coach Tito Vilanova through illness, this news comes as a big boost and it has the potential to rub off on everyone at the club in a positive way.

“The return of Abidal is the best news of the day and of the year. Watching him train is an example in sport and in life. "After the blow of yesterday, today there is great news for all Barca fans and for football as Abidal gets the all-clear,” said Barcelona captain Xavi.

Personally it will be tough for Abidal because although he has been training well, he has not played a first team game for Barcelona for a very long time. It’s been roughly a year since his last performance.

However, there will have been times where he thought he wouldn’t play ever again so that’s likely to give him the mental strength and determination to fight hard in every single game over the rest of the season.

That’s exactly what Barcelona need because although the La Liga title is virtually secure, they are teetering on the edge in the Champions League and can’t afford any more slip ups in a defensive sense.

Abidal also has the ability to compliment Xavi and Carles Puyol in terms of the leadership he can provide which is important because Barca have some very young players, who sometimes are a little too raw and eager, making debateable decisions.

It’s very positive news and touch wood, it will be the end of Abidal’s health problems.

How do you think the news benefits Barca?
