The German arrived in a cut-price deal from Werder Bremen last summer...but has failed to live up to the hype.
Chelsea found themselves victim of the excellent performances of Southampton against the big teams in the Premier League when they were downed 2-1 at St Marys yesterday. Goals from Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert cancelled out captain John Terry’s equalising goal.
The win was the least Southampton deserved for the level of their performance and using that same principle it was all The Blues deserved for what was an abject and languid away showing.
While many of the players drafted in to cover those given a day off ahead of the FA Cup replay against Manchester United struggled to perform to the level necessary one in particular player stood out for his ineffective display.
When Chelsea snapped up Werder Bremen winger Marko Marin they obviously caused quite a buzz with his signature. The 24-year-old German international had made a name for himself at Borussia Monchengladbach and was dubbed the ‘German Messi’ from a young age.
So when Chelsea managed to persuade Bremen to depart with their star name for a miserly sum of £6.5 million there was obviously palpable excitement amongst the Chelsea faithful.
One click on YouTube gave you the reason for such clamour. A showcase feature of his dribbling feats and technical ability was displayed on the web and many Chelsea fans took that as visual verbatim; this was a star of the future.
Apart from one pundit.
Kit Holden of the Independent Blogs section is a follower of the Bundesliga and he dubbed the signing ‘ridiculous’.
He also pointed out reasons why such a move was a bad one for Chelsea. Marin was involved in just six of Bremen’s 47 goals in the year prior to his signing and that formed the main crux of his argument. An extract that truly summed up his exasperation at the move is as follows:
‘’For most in Germany, the idea that Marin could become a key player in Chelsea’s much needed revival is as laughable as the idea that England could win Euro 2012.’’
Some of the comments on the article were harsh on the author:
As the title ironically suggests, this is a 'ridiculous' article. You make me feel as if we've signed Emile Heskey.
Useless article from a 'so called' journalist!!
This has got to be one of the laziest, ill-informed pieces of football “journalism” I have read in a long time.
Well I imagine Kit Holden would love to take a plate of humble pie to every single person who very publically laughed in his face as Marko Marin has been the most disappointing signing of the Premier League season.
Sure he has struggled with injury but even when given the opportunity he has failed to live up to the hype and simply put does not look anything like being the ‘German Messi’.
Now it seems he could be shipped out this summer with a return to Germany or a move to Russia potential options and he sure is talented and will likely forge a good career.
But for Chelsea? Just not good enough.
What have you made of Marko Marin this season?
