Avid gamers can secure a next-generation console for £20

Asda has stolen the march on competitors and announced that it is the first UK supermarket to offer pre-orders on Sony's hotly anticipated PlayStation 4.

Promising gamers that they can secure a next-generation console to pick up on the day of release, the pre-order costs £20.

“The successor of the highly popular PlayStation 3 promises to lead us into the future of gaming, pushing technology to its limits and providing a seamless experience for gamers,” the company said in a statement.

Asda, the nationwide supermarket, touted the various features that will come as standard with the console, such as the social networking experiences and the 'Remote Play' function that allows gamers to take control of each other's games via the internet.

Sony has yet to announce a specific release date but has promised that the console will hit shelves before Christmas 2013.

Meanwhile, speculation is waxing that Microsoft is gearing up to pull back the curtain on its new Xbox, with rumours suggesting a controversial move to an always-online requirement.

Asda's pre-order service is available here.
