1. 1865 - John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin, is surrounded by federal troops in a barn in Virginia. He ends up dead, although there remains some doubt as to whether he took his own life

2. 1937 - German planes attack Guernica, Spain, during the Spanish Civil War

3. 1947 - The FA Cup Final between Burnley and Charlton Athletic is the first to be televised from beginning to end, with Charlton winning 1-0

4. 1954 - Grace Kelly is on the cover of LIFE magazine

5. 1962 - The American Moon rocket Ranger IV lands on the far side of the Moon, but fails to send back pictures due a technical fault

6. 1964 - The NME Poll-winners Concert takes place at Wembley, featuring many top names including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Cliff Richard

7. 1975 - In the run up to the National Referendum on 5th June, the British Labour Party votes by almost 2-1 to leave the European Economic Community

8. 1982 - Rod Stewart is mugged in Los Angeles in broad daylight

9. 1984 - US President Ronald Reagan lands in China at the start of a six-day state visit, the first by an American President since 1972

10. 1986 - An explosion and fire at the No. 4 reactor of Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine results in a nuclear meltdown sending radioactivity into the atmosphere.

11. 1989 - A deadly tornado destroys all structures in an area of 2.3 sq mi in Saturia, Bangladesh leaving 80,000 homeless and a reported death toll of 1,300
