Blackburn Rovers misfit scores crucial goal in La Liga relegation battle

Ruben Rochina grabbed a late winner last night for Real Zaragoza against RCD Mallorca.

It has been tumultuous couple of seasons for Blackburn Rovers. From takeovers, managerial hiring and firings, player discontent, relegations and dressed up poultry running around the pitch there has been absolutely no shortage of incident at Ewood Park.

However Gary Bowyer has steadied the ship since being employed until the end of the season and now it seems that for as hard as the Venkys group appear to have tried Rovers will stay up this year; and avoid the indignity of League One football.

One of the reasons behind Blackburn’s recent lack of success has to be their bloated playing squad. The effect of having three managers in such a short space of time have left them with easily the largest squad in the Championship.

In order to combat the massive squad size many players have been offloaded on loan by the club; with 14 players currently plying their trade elsewhere temporarily.

One such player is 22-year-old forward Ruben Rochina.

When Blackburn snapped up the Spanish youth international who had been a star of the Barcelona La Masia scheme and despite some magical moments for the Lancashire club, including a back-heel equaliser against Leeds United in September, he was shipped out to Real Zaragoza of Spain on loan in January.

The Aragon side have an option to buy the talented player and if his goal against RCD Mallorca in this weekend’s relegation six-pointer turns out to be as crucial as it seems then that looks increasingly like an option they will activate.

After bursting clear of the chasing defence Rochina rifled a left foot shot past the goalkeeper to claim a late winner in the tie with the Balearic outfit.

The massive victory takes Zaragoza on to 30 points as they overtake Mallorca who are now bottom with 28.

He may not have been able to keep Blackburn in the Premier League last season but he might just keep Zaragoza in La Liga this year.
