Guillem Balague gives lowdown on Cristiano Ronaldo return to Manchester United talk

Cristiano Ronaldo Up Against Diego Forlan

Will Cristiano Ronaldo return to Manchester United this summer?

Despite our belief that the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson has had a negative impact on the chances of Manchester United signing Cristiano Ronaldo, it appears very much on the club's agenda.

The Mail claimed last night that United were pursuing the deal, with outgoing chief executive David Gill flying to Spain for talks with 'super-agent' Jorge Mendes who represents Ronaldo, but presented no quotes to verify the story.

With Wayne Rooney looking for a way out of United, few fans would be disappointed if Ronaldo were to take his place, so the proposition has got everybody talking.

But can it actually happen?

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague believes it will not be easy, in fact very difficult, to prise Ronaldo away from Madrid.

He posted earlier on his Sulia page, confirming the news that Gill had in fact flown out to meet up with Jorge Mendes.

Here are the key extracts from what he had to say; you can read the full post here.

"The new revelations are based on the fact that United’s CEO, David Gill flew out to Madrid for a meeting with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes. That is certainly true but it’s a long way from confirming that his charge will be heading for Manchester.

"In January Ronaldo announced to the footballing world that he would honour his contract, which was probably his way of saying that he wouldn’t renew it. He will, however, still feel that he has unfinished business at the Bernabeu.

"Club president, Florentino Perez, even though he has no real opposition, will be desperate to keep his star man at the club to start his new mandate properly. And he has already declared that he is going nowhere, in fact that the club will try to extend his contract.

"So the message for the club is clear: they have no intention whatsoever of getting rid of Ronaldo. His buy out clause is 1b euros. And Madrid won’t negotiate it down, so… I say Ronaldo will wear the Madrid shirt next season."

So there you have it, but is it the definitive view? Not quite. For the one who really knows the future is Ronaldo himself, who can make life very difficult for Madrid if he plays hardball over a return.

Can Moyes tempt him? That will be difficult, but with Sir Alex Ferguson still a director, perhaps he will try to persuade the former icon to come back.

United clearly want to make a big impact in the transfer market this summer, and the fact Gill has flown out to make United's case shows they are serious about it. In fact it is the biggest development in this whole saga yet, and if he can win over Mendes, that's half the battle won for the agent has real influence at Madrid.

What do you make of Balague's views? Will Ronaldo return or not?
