Falcao 'has clause in Monaco contract' allowing him to sign for Chelsea

A Spanish report is claiming Chelsea could still sign Falcao, just not this summer.

Colombian striker Radamel Falcao is expected to wrap up his move to Monaco today, in a staggering €60 million move from Atletico Madrid.

The prolific goalscorer is having his medical with the French side, with Premier League suitors Chelsea and Manchester United missing out.

However don't rule out Falcao playing his club football at Stamford Bridge in the future just yet, especially if life at Monaco does not turn out to be as rosy as he hoped.

Spanish radio show Punto Pelota is claiming Falcao's agent Jorge Mendes has had a release clause inserted into the striker's contract with Monaco.

Their report states that Chelsea and Real Madrid have precedent over any other club, and they can attempt to activate it as soon as January.

"They put a clause (which) applies to both teams. If Chelsea or Real Madrid Falcao ask the next January would take precedence over any outfit and would have to pay the same money as the Monaco over the transfer. A clause put (forward) by himself the player."

It means if Chelsea do want to sign Falcao they can do so for €60 million at seemingly any point into his Monaco deal.

By that point it may be too late for the striker, who has made his choices clear - to pursue the riches of Monaco rather than join Jose Mourinho's new Chelsea revolution, with the Blues likely to spend big on another striker.

There is also the fact that Falcao will be a year older at 28, and for Monaco to expect the fee to remain the same may be slightly unrealistic, and will depend on his goalscoring feats in Ligue One - which have the potential in fairness to be huge.

But to rule it out entirely as a possibility would be unwise, after all we expected Chelsea to sign a big name striker last summer and they did not do so, and given the transfer negotiating power of super-agemnt Jorge Mendes anything is possible. After all this is the man who persuaded Manchester United to spend £7 million on Bebe.

Real Madrid may end up being the club who need Falcao more than Chelsea, and while a January move is possible, we certainly don't expect him to give up on Monaco's exciting project without giving it at least a season in the principality.

Chelsea fans disappointed at missing out on the Colombian however, may have at least a slight glimmer of hope.

Chelsea fans would you want Falcao next season if it were indeed possible?
