Would it be wrong for Liverpool to let Martin Skrtel quit?

Martin Skrtel

Martin Skrtel is considering quitting Liverpool after one of his worst seasons at the club.

The Slovakian centre back doesn’t seem to have been the same ever since Brendan Rodgers dropped him from the first team, prompting him to question the reasons behind Rodgers’ decision.

With Zenit St Petersburg seemingly ready to snap him up the second he walks away from Anfield, the club and Rodgers have to ask themselves whether it would be right to let him walk away.

“I have not had any specific offers but if some should come and they interest me, I would probably consider it seriously - I am not saying that I want to leave at any cost. I feel sorry for what happened in this season,” he revealed.

Say what you like about Skrtel’s season, he remains a very experienced and very strong central defender who can make Liverpool a very intimidating back four to play against.

Just last summer when Manchester City were linked with a £20 million plus bid the majority of supporters were calling for the Slovakian to stay, with the board listening to those pleas.

Listening to his comments, he also seems to regret the way he defied Rodgers last season, which may have had some bearing on Jamie Carragher’s extended run of games as the club headed towards the end of the last campaign.

That’s significant because if he’s willing to go back on the comments he made about the manager, then he could still salvage something from the current state of his Liverpool career.

His thoughts about quitting seem to be born out of frustration and not having played well, not the fact he’s not in the side or any problems he has with Rodgers as the head of the club.

He’s very passionate and very determined, setting himself the highest possible standards when he represents the club in any competition.

Liverpool hold all of the power here because they are under no pressure to sell. Skrtel has three years left to run on his current deal, which means Liverpool can wait and try to convince him that he still has a big role to play with the club.

However, their current financial status in the English game means that if any side dangles a very lucrative carrot in front of them, they could snap it up because it will give Rodgers extra funds to work with throughout the summer.

Skrtel has emphasised that he’s been working like a demon in training to try and win back his place but as of the last chunk of last season, he wasn’t doing enough to win back his position.

The fact Carragher’s retired means there is now a natural place back in the side for him, it’s just a case of whether he can shake off his current frustrations and doubts that he has over his Liverpool future.

It would be a mistake for the club to let him walk away easily because they will be a weaker back four without him present.

Do you think he’s dispensable to the club?
