Tottenham, City and Chelsea flops on Barcelona's bargain hitlist

Claudio Pizarro

Strikers who endured disappointing spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea all feature on a list of players Barcelona are reportedly considering.

Despite signing Neymar in attack to complement Lionel Messi, Barcelona are still not done.

They want to sign another striker, with David Villa, Alexis Sanchez and Cristian Tello all linked with potential departures.

Their options range from the elite - Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez, to formiddable Spaniard Alvaro Negredo and Roberto Soldado, but also into bargain territory too.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has catalogued 18 potential players Barcelona could consider signing, which also include the Premier League's Edin Dzeko, Fernando Torres and Javier Hernandez.

While those three are each worth articles unto themselves as to why they would and wouldn't be either likely, or strong additions to the squad, it was the names on the bargain-bin option which caught our eye.

Three players who struggled to make an impact or endured memorable disappointment - remain options for Barcelona.

They are: Helder Postiga, Roque Santa Cruz and Claudio Pizarro.

Let's kick off with Pizarro - the Peruvian striker who has just lifted the Champions League with Bayern Munich. Age 34 he remains a devastating finisher, as Lille found out this season in the competition when he struck a hat-trick past them.

He spent one season at Chelsea in 2006/07, but failed to dislodge Didier Drogba from attack, scoring just two goals for them.

Amid ongoing managerial changes he was loaned back to Germany and later sold, where he went onto become the Bundesliga's record foreign goalscorer.

As he has shown this season he remains as lethal as ever, and on the cheap, certainly wouldn't be a bad plan B or C for Barcelona.

Over to Helder Postiga, the Spurs flop once hailed as the 'next big thing' who cost the club over £8 million. Again he scored just two goals and was ushered out of the club, not before scoring a crucial goal for Portugal against England at Euro 2004.

Now 30, he plays for Real Zaragoza where he been since 2011 and established himself as a reliable La Liga performer. He scored 13 goals for the club this season and has 25 international goals to his name across his career. It is estimated he would cost Barcelona as little as €5 million, a potential bargain.

And finally one of the most interesting of the lot, the case of Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz. To describe him as a Premier League flop would not be entirely fair, for he was superb in his debut season for Blackburn, bagging 20 goals in all competitions.

He was later sold to Manchester City for £17.5 million and that's where it began to go wrong, for such was the competition in the squad he was barely afforded a chance, with his high wages becoming a considerable drain on their resources.

Several loans later, his contract will finally expire at City at the end of June, meaning Barcelona could pick him up on a free transfer. He has been playing at Malaga this season, scoring some crucial goals amid their Champions League run, also establishing himself as a proven La Liga goalscorer. At the age of 31 he will still feel he has much to offer.

If Barcelona did end up with any of these it may be perhaps a shock. But after spending big money on Neymar, they will have to consider all options, especially with a new goalkeeper needed to replace Victor Valdes and a central defensive partner for Gerard Pique with Puyol's regular injuries and Abidal leaving the club.

For each striker, it would represent a truly remarkable turnaround from their last appearances in the Premier League.
