Would Newcastle United take Demba Ba back if they had a chance?

The Senegalese forward is already looking surplus to requirements at Chelsea, but would Newcastle United be keen to take Demba Ba back this summer if the chance arose?

When Demba Ba completed his move to Stamford Bridge in January, it always looked likely to be a short-term measure for Chelsea, who needed to bring in some extra firepower relatively cheaply before reshaping their squad in the summer.

With Jose Mourinho now installed at Chelsea, they will surely now step up their pursuit of a new star striker, and with Ba already behind Fernando Torres in the pecking order, and Romelu Lukaku back in the reckoning at Stamford Bridge, the Senegalese player could find himself a bit part player after just six months at the club.

Ba would have known this was a possibility, and there is every chance he is happy to stay and fight for starts at Chelsea, but if Mourinho was keen to move him on, would former club Newcastle United be a possibility?

Despite leaving early in January, Ba still finished the season as Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League, five goals clear of his nearest rival Papiss Cisse. The Magpies have so far struggled to replace Ba at St James’ Park, and he clearly would clearly improve their squad if they brought him back in the summer.

However there are some caveats. There will be some ill-feeling towards Ba, who left Newcastle in a relegation scrap after they had taken a chance on him despite his long-term injury concerns. It is also a worry that Ba and Cisse have yet to form a partnership where both are able to find the net regularly, with Cisse only finding his form after Ba left.

With that in mind, Newcastle might look to bring in forwards who complement Cisse this summer, rather than Ba, who seems strangely incompatible with his compatriot.

However Ba’s talent and record at Newcastle United might convince the club to welcome him back if given a chance this summer, and he cannot be blamed too much for taking the chance to challenge for trophies and earn a bigger wage packet at Chelsea this season, even if he only ends up spending a few months at Stamford Bridge.

What do you think? Should Newcastle United sign Demba Ba if they have a chance?
