News and gossip from the past 48 hours at The Emirates.
Arsenal were humbled on the opening day of the Premier League season at home to Aston Villa. Arsenal lossed 3-1 to their rivals, in a game which also saw Laurent Koscielny sent off, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs added to the injury crisis.
The result has incensed Arsenal fans, with one supporter group penning a letter to chief executive Ivan Gazidis demanding changes to the transfer policy. They claimed there was a ‘poisonous atmosphere’ at The Emirates yesterday:
‘’There hasn't been a poisonous atmosphere like this at Arsenal for over 30 years and the Board has simply stood by, while things have gone from bad to worse. I am sure you appreciate this can no longer happen.’’
Arsenal will reportedly go back in for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender. Two months ago the club had a £19 million bid for the 24-year-old German international rejected by Bayer - but after watching his stooges succumb to a humbling 3-1 opening day defeat to Aston Villa, Arsene Wenger realises he is in desperate need of new arrivals.
If Arsenal want to snap up Michu from Swansea, he will reportedly cost them a whopping £25 million. The Spaniard, who cost The Swans just £2 million from Rayo Vallecano last summer, is believed to have an agreement in his new contract which suggests that the Welsh outfit do not have to entertain the idea of selling him before that fee is met.
It comes as a deal to sign Luis Suarez sits dead in the water.
Finally, and Arsenal are rumoured to be back in for Manchester City defender MIcah Richards. The versatile defender is believed to be a prime target for The Gunners after their defeat to Aston Villa - but he will not be coming on the cheap.
