A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
Chelsea have completed the signing of Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Willian on a five-year-deal after the Brazilian midfielder was granted a work permit. The 25-year-old had been on the brink of a move to Tottenham Hotspur last week before Chelsea swooped to gazump the deal and bring Willian to Stamford Bridge.
Willian has said it is a dream to move to Chelsea, and that Jose Mourinho’s presence at the club was a major factor in his decision.
"I've always been following Chelsea and every time I came to London I would try to see a Chelsea game and see how the team was doing because it's been my dream to come to play here,” he told the club’s website.
"Finally it's become a reality, and when the offer came I never gave a thought to anybody else, I said to myself that I would run here, and I'm happy to be here now. Chelsea was always my first choice.”
Willian could be followed to Chelsea from Anzhi by Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o, with reports that the striker has said his goodbyes at the Russian side ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge. Mourinho is keen to add another striker to his squad, and after being unable to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United, Eto’o has become a priority.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas has said he does not think Chelsea will allow Juan Mata to leave for a rival club in England. There has been speculation linking the Spaniard with Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United due to the amount of attacking midfielders Chelsea have on their books after signing Willian and Mourinho’s decision not to start Mata at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has said he is aiming for revenge against Chelsea in Friday’s Super Cup final. Chelsea beat the German side to win the Champions League in 2012, although Bayern made amends with a treble including the trophy last season.
Newcastle are keen on a loan move for Demba Ba, with the Senegalese striker unlikely to be a regular for Chelsea this season once Eto’o arrives at Stamford Bridge. Ba began his Premier League career at West Ham, where he scored seven times in 12 league matches in 2011.
On HITC today we argue that a Manchester United bid for David Luiz does not make sense.
