If someone is playing abroad, like Ozil, then he is lost: That is at least what German media is thinking most of the time.
Fans have to search if they want information about players in foreign leagues. It doesn’t matter if you are Mario Gomez, Andre Schurrle or Lukas Podolski.
It doesn’t matter if you are the most expensive German player either. Out of sight, out of mind. Only the Bundesliga matters.
But when they are writing about Mesut Ozil’s debut, as at least some news sites did, they are full of compliments.
The famous Kicker magazine reports that Ozil made a strong debut. 'Only 614 seconds were needed for his first assist.
Spiegel online, the so called tabloid for academics, pointed out that Ozil was the key player in this match. 'Ozil wins the game for Arsenal with great assists'
Bild.de writes that Ozil is paying back Real Madrid with a vengeance 'His two assists were marvellous. A topnotch premiere in the Premier League'
And his injured team mate Lukas Podolski shared on twitter his own admiration for Ozil: 'a perfect Premier League start.'
Nice reviews for the £42.4 million man, but let’s wait till next weekend to see if his performance gets lost in Germany’s Bundesliga news.
If he produces something special, he may be able to give the stars of Dortmund and Bayern another run for their money when it comes to column inches.
