Arsenal or Everton could triple striker’s wages … and still only pay him £2,550-a-week

Saido Berahino

Saido Berahino is hot property now ... and considering his wages you can understand why.

This time last year we ran a story on young West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, where we predicted big things for the future of this talented young boy. Now the Burundi-born striker is enjoying a prolific start to life with The Baggies this season, scoring five goals in his six appearances so far, including that wonderful finish against Manchester United last weekend.

So what does the future hold for Berahino, the player whose story has so far captivated football fans across the country?

Well after banging in the goals for both West Brom and England’s Under-21 outfit he was always going to find himself linked with a move away from the club.

Last week The Daily Mail commented that Berahino was a transfer target for both Everton and Arsenal - and they quoted a figure of £300k in compensation for the player, whose contract expires next summer.

It was also revealed, most likely via a link through an agent that Berahino was on only £850-a-week - pittance in today’s Premier League wage bracket.

Saido Berahino: The West Brom starlet going from rags to riches

Steve Clarke is furious with these revelations, blaming the agent for the leak:

"Seeing what came out in the press after the game last week, obviously his agent has been a little bit busy by putting things out in the open. I understand that it's an agent's job and that's what he has to do, but now is the time for everyone to be calm and focus on improving Saido as a player. It was a little bit naughty for the agent to put out the level of his wages and what he earns. It's not correct..."

So Clarke is furious, and you can understand why. Even if an interested party tripled the 20-year-old’s wages they would still be paying him just a paltry £2,250-a-week … a true bargain of a weekly fee for somebody so talented.

So no wonder they are interested.

Criticise the agent all you want, but his job is to represent his client … a client he has just made England’s most wanted young talent.

Pretty good work if you ask me.
