Another former Tottenham boss says Andros Townsend is ‘like Robben’

Arjen Robben

Harry Redknapp made the comparison earlier in the month, while Fulham boss Martin Jol is also on board.

At the start of the month Harry Redknapp made his feelings about Andros Townsend, a player he managed at Tottenham and QPR, very clear when discussing his potential involvement with the England team.

Redknapp stated:

‘’If you look at Arjen Robben, Andros Townsend is the closest thing we have produced to him. I'm not saying he is Robben yet, he is not, but he is very similar. He plays on the right, dribbles well, runs at people, gets shots at goal. I think he could be fantastic on that big pitch at Wembley, a real threat.’’

But ‘Arry is not the only person who feels that Townsend is just like the flying Dutchman - in fact he is not the only ex-Tottenham manager.

Martin Jol has today been speaking about Patijm Kasami, his own young starlet at Fulham and the subject soon changed to comparisons.

And Jol believes that the young Swiss is very similar to the star at his former club.

Now Townsend was just 16-years-old when Jol left White Hart Lane in 2007, so they never really had the chance to work with each other in North London - but after seeing him come of age recently, Jol had a similar opinion to Redknapp on the player.

He said of the player:

"If you take the likes of Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton and Andros Townsend, they played for other clubs then came back. Now Townsend is the one I go to the stadium for. He's a good player, almost like Arjen Robben, but not as good. He makes things happen for his team and Kasami's the same.’’

Now whether the comparison is an easy stick to wave, considering that the two are both left-footed right wingers, or not is of course a different matter.

But considering Robben is potentially one of the most dangerous wingers in the world, it is high praise indeed.

Do you think Townsend could ever be as good as Robben?
