'Arsene Wenger is not one of my great friends'

Joey Barton Interview

Joey Barton has been speaking about his visit to Arsenal on Tuesday.

Arsenal made short work of Marseille on Tuesday night, much to the disappointment of one particular Englishman.

Joey Barton joined the Marseille fans in the away section, after meeting club officials in the executive boxes before the game - and it was clear he was longing for his former team to get a result.

The QPR midfielder also took time out to speak to the French media, and discussed his relationship - or lack of, with Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger

He told French newspaper La Provence:

"I always want to score against Arsenal, Arsene Wenger is not one of my great friends.

"I always had problems with him, he often complained to me, but I've always performed well against Arsenal."

Barton has in fact scored past Arsenal before, notably two penalties in a 4-4 draw with Newcastle - after Abou Diaby had been sent off for pushing him. In total he has three goals against the Gunners in 17 games.

In those matches he has suffered 10 defeats, four draws, and just three wins.

He was also involved in a notable incident in August 2011 which saw Gervinho sent off on his debut.

The question for Barton is really whether he will get a chance to face Arsenal again. With QPR, the side he once vowed to never play for again, sitting in third in the Championship it's possible - but his critics will argue he has found his level.
