Arsenal and Barcelona target may have €20m release clause, but he doesn't want to leave

Wolfsburg

Luiz Gustavo of VfL Wolfsburg has been linked with both teams this week. But he has confirmed he wants to stay in Germany.

This summer saw Arsenal among the suitors for Bayern Munich star Luiz Gustavo. It came after the Brazilian holding midfielder played a starring role in the Brazil side that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in the summer.

Despite his obvious class he was not at all ensured of a place in the Bayern Munich side after the arrival of Thiago Alcantara - and after a season in which he did not feature regularly.

The holding midfielder position is one Arsene Wenger wanted to strengthen in the summer - and Gustavo soon emerged as a standout option.

It was even reported at one point that a deal was done - worth his £17.5 million release clause.

Gustavo signed for VfL Wolfsburg on the 16th August - choosing to stay in Germany, the country he had lived since joining Hoffenheim in 2007, to continue his career.

So when the news broke this week that he still had a release clause in his deal - this time in the €20 million ball-park - immediately Arsenal were flagged as a potential destination.

It comes amid speculation in Spain that Barcelona were looking to snap him up in January as a replacement for Alex Song and to provide cover in the defensive positions.

At that price you can understand why - and it may also be that teams are potentially viewing Wolfsburg as something of a soft touch in the transfer market. I mean they have put a relatively low release clause in place for a player they only recently splurged out on.

However this weekend has confirmed that Gustavo has no desire to leave the Bundesliga club. Speaking to Kicker magazine in Germany he stated:

"You are happy to know about things like that; still it's an old story. I am with Wolfsburg and I have a long-term deal at this club."

So both Arsenal and Barca can forget about a deal right now as Gustavo will remain with Wolfsburg for the foreseeable future - regardless of his €20 million release clause.

Should Arsenal make a move for Luiz Gustavo this winter?
