One former Liverpool player sent off ... another saves the day in six-goal thriller

Carragher, Kuyt, Adam

Raul Meireles and Dirk Kuyt were at the centre of things as Fenerbahce drew 3-3 with Besiktas yesterday.

During his time in the UK with Chelsea and Liverpool Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles certainly built up a reputation as something of a combative and committed individual.

Indeed he is still thought of rather fondly by some fans of both teams for his extravagant style, bizarre hairstyles and tattooed physique.

Meireles has since moved on to Turkey - where he plays for Fenerbahce. His time in Istanbul has been marred by controversy. He received an initial 11-game ban (reduced to four on appeal) for allegedly spitting at a referee in 2012 but surprisingly, apart from that blip, he is reasonably well behaved.

Meireles has only received three red cards in his career - one of which came last night in a heated derby with Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig.

Meireles was judged to have stamped on midfield opponent Velli Kavlak when going in for a 50-50 challenge - and received his marching orders in due course.

It was a thrilling encounter - which looked all the while as if Besiktas were going to claim a famous away victory.

Two goals from Portuguese international made it 3-2 to Besiktas - and seemed to have the game wrapped up despite themselves being reduced to ten men with 20 minutes remaining.

However, nobody banked on another former Anfield hero saving the day.
