Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Marouane Fellaini performance v Everton

Fellaini United

How did Manchester United fans feel Marouane Fellaini played against his former club this evening?

Manchester United took on Everton this evening at Old Trafford as David Moyes took on his former team for the first time since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at the Premier League champions.

But it was not just Moyes who would be going up against his former team in Everton’s visit - but Marouane Fellaini as well.

The Belgian international finally left Everton this summer for £27 million but despite his previous good form in the Premier League whilst on Merseyside he has struggled to justify that price-tag since arriving at The Theatre of Dreams.

But with Phil Jones suspended and Michael Carrick injured the gangly midfielder was always likely to start the game this evening … and start he did.

Judging by the overall reaction on Twitter, United fans would rather he hadn’t.

Although there were some pockets of support for the player, with a few suggesting he was being made a scapegoat because he was an easy target, overall the vast majority of fans on the social network were in agreement - Fellaini is not good enough to play for Manchester United.

He certainly struggled to contain the swashbuckling Ross Barkley and James McCarthy this evening - and in fact he was lucky not to receive a red card for a foul on the man who effectively replaced him this summer. A high challenge around his groin left the Irishman needing treatment and Fellaini wondering how the card brandished was not red.

Statistically however the reaction from fans might be overzealous. He had an incredible 93% pass success rate and had 89 touches of the ball - more than any other player on the pitch.

But it appears to be his physical attributes that have come in for the most swathing criticism from United fans. He is not blessed with pace and today it showed against the dynamic midfield that Everton put out on to the field of play.

It is a tough one to call but he is certainly struggling to win over the United fans at this moment in time and as for Moyes - well the 5-0 win in Leverkusen now looks long forgotten.

Here is some of the reaction on Twitter...
