This week has been a tumultuous one in the world of Manchester United. Their defeats against Everton and Newcastle United at home have left them way off the pace in the Premier League and now it seems the club have a bizarre transfer rumour surrounding last summer’s marquee signing.
Robin van Persie is said to be unhappy at Old Trafford according to some sources although the player himself has remained tight-lipped on the subject, David Moyes has dismissed the chit-chat as ‘rubbish’.
It is believed he is not best pleased that Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer his manager and that his injury problems have not been treated with enough seriousness by the new regime.
At the moment it is of course just conjecture and the reality is no such transfer request currently exists - but it has not stopped the foreign press from catching on and linking him to a rather surprising move.
He is being linked with Barcelona this weekend. Tata Martino is said to want an out and out striker up front to provide the club with a suitable plan B.
Martino has certainly adopted a very slightly more direct approach to football than his predecessors at the Nou Camp and the likes of Oscar Cardozo and David Trezeguet have recently been linked with the role.
Now it is the turn of RVP, who according to Spanish paper Sport, would be their very own Henrik Larsson type signing all over again.
At 30-years-old RVP is certainly not a stereotypical Barca signing - but either was Larsson, who subsequently spent time on loan with Manchester United in 2007, when he left Celtic for Catalonia in 2004.
However he is still considered a cult hero with the Blaugrana after a two season spell, which included a star turn in his final game for the club, the UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal.
Now Barca are looking for a similar player - and RVP seems to be on that list of targets.
Could RVP really make a move to Barcelona?
