Yesterday we brought you the news that Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Eboue paid tribute to Nelson Mandela after Galatasaray’s Turkish Cup match against Elazigspor.
As an icon not just of South Africa but the entire African continent, it was an understandable and heartfelt gesture from two Ivory Coast players towards a man who had passed away just hours earlier.
And yet now it is being reported that both players must face Turkey’s Professional Football Discipline Committee as a result of their actions.
Hurriyet Daily News claims that because the players had not received permission to wear the t-shirts beforehand, they may now face disciplinary action.
Football may be a mixture of the sublime and the absurd, but if the players are charged for what was clearly meant as nothing more than a tribute to a great man, the word “absurd” may not do it justice.
What do you think of the reports suggesting the players will face disciplinary action?
