Nothing has been sealed yet but rumours are building and more and more hints lead to a possible suitor for the talented Julian Draxler.
In their newest issue, German magazine Sport Bild reports that Bundesliga side Schalke are trying to get a swap deal with Premier League team Chelsea in place. The deal includes Kevin de Bruyne, the Belgian attacking midfielder, recently outcast by Jose Mourinho.
However last week Mourinho praised his young talent by saying: “Kevin is showing desire and working very hard. I feel sorry for not giving him big opportunities up to now, but he's working better than ever. […] When he works the way he is, he has to have a chance.”
But nonetheless a deal with Schalke would still make sense because de Bruyne might not be sure if the Chelsea manager will change his mind again - Ahead of the World Cup he may not want to take the risk. Besides, a move to the club from the heart of Germany’s Ruhr Valley would most likely lead to an assured position in the starting line-up.
Schalke’s general manager Horst Heldt once said: “Kevin has tremendous quality. If Jose Mourinho indeed decides to lend him, we will be there.” Schalke won’t likely say no to a full time switch either.
Even Belgian national manager Marc Wilmots, a Schalke legend, has advised de Bruyne to transfer to his former club - another reason for the move to go ahead.
Meanwhile Mourinho might think: Why not? Is there any reason why he shouldn’t swap de Bruyne for Draxler if the price is right?
A swap deal would most likely fit Draxler as well.
Draxler is clearly unhappy at Schalke and wants to play as a attacking midfielder like he did last season stating in German football magazine kicker:
“Meanwhile I have accept the fact that I am not welcome at the number ten position here at Schalke,” told Draxler and continued with his criticism by saying:
“I am still convinced to be more dangerous in the middle then outside. Even though I am perhaps the only one [who think that way].”
But if Draxler really wants to play as attacking midfielder Arsenal, might not be the right place for him despite Wenger’s good will. As for right now the 20-year-old has not yet the class and experience to beat Mesut Ozil in the middle or Lukas Podolski or Theo Walcott on the outside.
Sure Draxler could become Ozil’s understudy but that might not be the ideal situation for the young gun and for Arsenal as well considering Draxler’s outrageously high transfer fee.
The agent of the Belgian international is cited today that Bayer Leverkusen are among the favourites to sign his client.
German tabloid Bild on the other hand claims that VfL Wolfsburg is in the lead of the de Bruyne race.
But ultimately Schalke will most likely have the upper hand if they play the Draxler card. The Bundesliga side could fill the void of their greatest post-Ozil talent, who is set to leave the club anyway at some point in time, with Kevin de Bruyne from Chelsea.
If the price is right why should Chelsea deny a deal with Schalke? They would get the up-and-coming talent Arsenal wanted and Mourinho is able to bolster up his attack even further.
What do you think? Would a Draxler-de Bruyne swap deal make sense for Chelsea?
Will it be another Arsenal miss?
