With Malky Mackay has been told that he will not have a single penny to spend in January, we take a look at 5 players that they could sell to raise funds.
The former West Ham United striker signed for Cardiff in 2012 for a fee reported 2.75 million and at the time seemed like a shrewd, ambitious signing. The fleet-footed striker has been plagued with Injuries in his time in South Wales and could be one of the players sold in January to raise funds for new players coming in. The likely destination for the player is back to the Championship, and his reputation should be able to land him a good second-tier side. He has previously been linked with Leeds United, but could be a good signing for Nottingham Forest as they search for a striker to boost their promotion chances.
The signing of John Brayford has been one surrounded by mystery. The right back was largely considered the Football Leagues best right-back in his time at Derby, credited with an impeccable attitude and a good work effort. This saw Cardiff City move for the player after their promotion, winning the players services with a £1.5 million pound bid. There is likely to be a lot of interest from the Football League in the former Rams defender with his former club being one of the likely candidates.
The former Arsenal defender was a key part in Cardiff's title win last season, and in fact has been promoted with a Championship champion medal in his last 3 years but has never had a fair crack at the Premier League. He is likely to be one of Cardiff's more sellable assets and would attract a lot of attention in the Championship from the league's big boys. I would think Brighton and Watford could be teams attracted by the City players credentials.
Experienced winger Don Cowie has feature 12 times in the Premier League this season, but with strong interest from the Championship, the Bluebirds could be willing to move the player on for added income. Cowie was snapped up on a free transfer by Cardiff in 2011 and has proved to be a sterling acquisition by the club, playing 78 times in total for the club . He could be another good acquisition for Leeds United that could help boost their promotion credentials.
Influential midfield maestro could be the biggest bargain to grab from Cardiff this winter, having only started one game this season in the Premier League. The former Brighton winger scored 7 goals for Cardiff last season, and could offer a real burst of quality to any Championship side. The larger Championship clubs will all be eying him up, and with perhaps a potential bidding war for the player - Brighton could add quite a bit to their transfer kitty with his sale.
Whilst it's not nice that Cardiff City have found themselves in this predicament, the only way around it is to let players go and without wanting to lose integral first-team players then Championship sides such as Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Derby County could all benefit from their financial plight.
