A year ago today, Arsenal target took his first step towards the Emirates

Iker Casillas

12 months ago to the day, Iker Casillas lost his place in the Real Madrid first-team.

Reports from Spain on Saturday claimed Arsenal were keen to bring Real Madrid pair Iker Casillas and Alvaro Morata to the Emirates Stadium.

Those reports were later picked up by the English press, with the Mirror claiming Arsene Wenger wanted an experienced goalkeeper to compete with current number one Wojiech Szczesny.

The fact that Casillas is already “competing” with Diego Lopez at the Bernabeu suggests he will not be too keen to simply swap one fight for first-team football for another. But in truth the Spaniard is far more likely to be first choice in London than in Madrid, if only for his experience and undeniable, if recently underused, abilities.

But what many fans may not have realised is that today – 22 December 2013 – is the one-year anniversary of Casillas very public removal as Real’s number one.

It was on this day last year that the then-Madrid coach Jose Mourinho opted to drop Casillas in favour of Antonio Adan for a match against Malaga.

It was a decision that did not go according to plan, with Real losing 3-2 and Casillas looking on forlornly from the bench. But it was the start of an extended hiatus of sorts for the Spanish international, and one he has never fully recovered from.

With Arsenal linked with a January loan move for the 32-year-old, he could soon be back to doing what he does best…regularly. But he may look back on the occasion exactly 12 months ago that pushed him, however reluctantly at the time, towards the Bernabeu exit.

Should Arsenal bring Casillas in on loan?
