Eight reasons why Manchester United must give Nick Powell a first-team chance

Olt Trafford Outside

After taking his goal tally to eight for the season on Saturday, surely Nick Powell will soon be heading back to United for first-team duties.

Nick Powell is a very good footballer indeed. Sometimes, an assessment of a player’s talents is really that simple.

It was clear when he burst on to the scene at Crewe Alexandra, his goals a veritable highlights package of some of the best strikes of the season.

It was just as clear when he made his debut for Manchester United against Wigan Athletic, and scored a goal that demonstrated both confidence and innate talent.

And now it is clearer than ever, after Powell made it eight goals for the season since joining the Latics on loan.

Powell is an attacking midfielder, but it appears he can play anywhere and still make an impact. The heir-apparent to Paul Scholes, with more than a touch of Frank Lampard about him, the 19-year-old has time on his side and talent in abundance.

But it is surely only a matter of months – or possibly weeks – until Powell gets his chance in the United first-team. Given the emergence and impact of Adnan Januzaj, there is no reason his teammate cannot do the same.

Doubters will say Powell is playing in the second tier, that goals against the likes of Bolton, Derby County and Reading do not prove he can cut it in the top flight. But the last of those clubs was in the top flight last season, and you can only score against the opponent you are facing – something Powell is doing with increasing regularity.

Powell is not just a goal-scorer, but his eight goals spread across the Championship and the Europa League are a huge statement of intent on behalf of a teenager who is ready for the step up.

Now all David Moyes needs to do is bring him home.

Do you think Nick Powell is ready for the United first-team?
