On this Christmas Day: Lampard being forced out, fed up Vertonghen and frugal Wenger

Frank Lampard 2

On Christmas Day 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, Christmas Day 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from Christmas Day 2012…

No expensive gifts at The Emirates

Arsene Wenger hinted that Arsenal would not spend big in January - despite what was, at the time, a real poor run of form:

“We are in the market, but only if we find players who will really strengthen us because we have a good squad. But if we find an exceptional player then we will take him.”

In the end they just signed Nacho Monreal - but have gone on to be more open with their spending recently.

To be Frank

Apparently Frank Lampard was being forced out at Chelsea.

Because of his advancing age the Chelsea icon was reportedly not going to be offered a new deal at the club and instead would be let go on a free transfer at the end of the season.

However he was rewarded for his good form last season by receiving a one-year extension in May.

No Christmas cheer from Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen was not best pleased at Spurs. He was having to play at left-back for the majority of the campaign because of injuries in the position.

But his favoured, and perceived best position, is at the heart of defence - so he became increasingly perturbed at not being afforded the opportunity to play there.

Funny that, because a year on and he was again complaining about the exact same problem before he got injured.

Should Vertonghen be playing at centre back more often?
