Redknapp says Remy could cost double in summer, will Newcastle pay?

Loic Remy has been one of the shrewdest loan signings in the Premier League so far this season.

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has said that striker Loic Remy is worth £16m in today’s transfer market, and has warned Newcastle that is what they will have to pay if they don’t buy the forward this month.

Remy signed for QPR from Marseille for around £8m in the January transfer window last season in order to attempt to prevent the club from being relegated. Despite his six goals for QPR it wasn’t enough for them to retain top flight status. The French forward has an £8m clause in his contract according to the London Evening Standard.

This season, however, Remy has spent the season on loan at Newcastle United - and was their only major signing in the summer – but has proved to be a shrewd piece of business having scored 10 goals in his 18 Premier League games for the Magpies so far this season.

Redknapp is quoted in the Evening Standard saying: 'I don’t know what the deal is. You’d think they’d want to snap him up, wouldn’t you? If they don’t then someone else will.

‘For what we got him for, he’s probably worth double that now. He’s scored goals in the Premier League again this year.

‘If someone came and offered £15m or £16m for him, I’d sell him if it was my choice. But it’s not, it’s down to the chairman.’

If Remy is available for the same price QPR paid for him earlier on in the season – then it wouldn’t be surprising if Newcastle do try and secure the deal now, because the likelihood of them paying such a big fee in the summer looks a little unlikely if their transfer dealings recently are anything to go by.

In the last transfer window, their highest fee was £7m – and the maximum they have spent in recent windows on one player has been £9m.

Undoubtedly, Newcastle will want to pay a little less than the fee suggested by Redknapp for the French striker’s services.

Do you think Newcastle will sign Remy on a permanent deal?
