A report in the British press today suggests that the Real Madrid man is on the verge of moving to Old Trafford on loan.
Manchester United are believed to be working hard behind the scenes to secure a number of new faces this January transfer window, with one of the areas they are thought to be looking to strengthen at left-back.
Although the talk of a new bid for Leighton Baines has been relatively quiet, a report today in the Sunday Telegraph suggests that David Moyes’ men may well be close to bringing Fabio Coentrao to Old Trafford.
The Portugal international was a target for the Premier League champions over the summer, while Tottenham were also accredited with an interest in the former Benfica man.
However, Coentrao ended up staying at Real Madrid, where he has found first-team opportunities few and far between this season.
The report suggests that United are working hard to secure the full-back’s capture on loan for the rest of the campaign, and have met with his agent Jorge Mendes to thrash out a potential deal.
With the World Cup less than six months away the defender will be keen for regular action, while Patrice Evra has been something of a weak link in recent times for United.
Tottenham are also struggling at left-back and were thought to be a keen admirer of the Portuguese star, but it appears that United have beaten Tim Sherwood’s men to the punch.
Would Coentrao be a good signing for United?
