West Ham miss out on Lewandowski successor - Repeat of heartache for Big Sam

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce missed out on Robert Lewandowski when Blackburn Rovers manager. Now he has missed the man Dortmund have signed to replace him one day.

Back in 2010 Sam Allardyce was on the brink of bringing in a young Polish striker from Lech Poznan at Blackburn Rovers. The young striker in question was Robert Lewandowski.

Valued at €4 million by his club he may have made the switch - if it wasn’t for Eyjafjallajökull.

The gigantic Icelandic ash cloud caused by the eruption grounded many flights across the continent - including an apparent one for Lewandowski to arrive at Manchester Airport.

In the end he went on to Borussia Dortmund - and the rest as they say is history.

Big Sam has spoken of how much he rues the way those transfer negotiations ended up:

"I think about it every time I see him play…I watched him play, but I didn't get the chance to meet him. I think his agent said he couldn't come over because of the ash cloud."

Well, is history about to repeat itself?

A couple of months ago West Ham were linked with signing young Finnish striker Tim Vayrynen. The son of former PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mika Vayrynen scored 17 goals from 20 starts in the Veikkausliga, Finland’s top flight, being the top scorer in the division.

Built like Andy Carroll - he has also been banging in the goals for the Finland under-21 side, scoring four in six in the qualifying for the 2015 UEFA u-21 Championships in the Czech Republic.

So he is certainly a potential star of the future - and at just 20-years-old he would have been a great signing for The Hammers.

Unfortunately he has gone elsewhere. Despite interest from AC Milan he has joined ... Borussia Dortmund.

He arrives from FC Honka for an undisclosed fee and will go into the Dortmund II team for the rest of the season - before getting the chance to earn a first-team berth in pre-season.

He comes from humble beginnings, as did Lewandowski, and given the right time and nurturing who knows?

He might be another player who makes Allardyce weep every time he steps out on to the pitch.

Are you gutted West Ham missed out on Vayrynen?
